Marianne Ross and Dan Harris, the first AMC general manager to take a chance on families living with autism by instituting the

Life With Autism is a new series of inspirational and informative stories about those who are touched by autism.

You may be aware that AMC Entertainment (AMC) and ASA have teamed up to bring families affected by autism and other disabilities a special opportunity to enjoy their favorite films in a safe and accepting environment on a monthly basis with the “Sensory Friendly Films” program.

Now read how this wonderful, nationwide program came to be, thanks to the efforts of one determined mother confronting the challenges of her daughter's autism...

Taking a Chance on Families Living With Autism
by Marianne Ross

The sensory friendly movie idea started in the summer of 2007, when my daughter, Meaghan, who was 7 at the time, was thoroughly enjoying Hairspray but was asked to leave a movie theatre because she exhibited self-stimulating behaviors, such as hand flapping and jumping up and down.

This negative experience prompted me to find a way for Meaghan and other special needs children to enjoy a movie regardless of their physical or behavioral differences.

Dan Harris, manager at our local AMC Columbia 14 Theatre, didn't hesitate for a second when I called to ask if he would consider allowing the Howard County Maryland Autism Society of America to host a movie for special needs children.

I explained the challenges that our children face, specifically sensory issues with lights, volume and self-stimulating behaviors. Dan, rather than being dissuaded, embraced these issues with his positive attitude. He envisioned a monthly program that featured current movies with essential accommodations to ensure a successful outing for all families with special needs children.

I arranged to advertise the movies through the Howard County-ASA and the Howard County school system in order to reach each family with school-aged children in the county. Meanwhile, Dan networked with the AMC Theatre's corporate office to create a national program and an official partnership between AMC and the Autism Society of America.

The first movie was a huge success in November 2007, and the program went national this April in 68 theatres in 36 AMC markets. They are also going to start employing people with autism in the theatres, with support from ASA!

Our thanks go out to Marianne and Dan for showing us how enlightened individuals can come together to help those with ASD reach their full potential.

The NAMI Standards Work Group (SWG), a work group created by the Infrastructure Committee of the NAMI National Board of Directors, has worked diligently and thoughtfully to complete the second Draft NAMI Standards of Excellence - Phase 2 on three themes: Program, Fundraising, and What Constitutes a NAMI Affiliate. Creative Minds is a periodic e-newsletter published by the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC). The MCC seeks to ensure that all Massachusetts young people have access to quality, creative learning experiences in school and out of school.

Visit Creative Minds, the MCC's online resource for arts education and creative learning in Massachusetts.

Creative Schools Projects Show Off Their Achievements

Spring is the season in which many of the projects funded through the MCC's Creative Schools Program showcase what their students have learned over the course of the year. During April and May, the MCC is working with funded schools and districts to invite members of the Legislature to their student showcases. These projects are an exciting testament to what can happen when arts, sciences, and humanities are integrated into the curriculum.

  • The Page to Stage Young Playwright's Celebration showcased the work of young playwrights from Cambridge Public Schools in staged productions of their work. The daylong event, held at Cambridge's new Central Square Theater, was a culmination of the multi-year Page-to-Stage Program, a partnership between CPS and the Underground Railway Theater that promotes literacy, writing skills, and cross-curricular connections through the craft of playwriting.

  • North Adams Public Schools celebrated its Creative Schools-funded artist residency program with three student performances at Kidspace at Mass MoCA.

  • On May 15, Boston Arts Academy will present student-created animated short films created through a residency with artist Pell Osborn.

  • On May 18, professional musicians from the Boston Symphony Orchestra will play in a concert with Dracut High School's brass band and orchestra. The concert is the result of five sessions that allowed students to work side-by-side with pros.

Big Yellow School Bus Update

MCC and Bank of America's Big Yellow School Bus program has now provided grants to hundreds of Massachusetts schools to offset the cost of field trips to nonprofit cultural organizations. Every school in the Commonwealth, preK-12, is eligible to receive one grant.

Limited funds are still available. Schools that haven't received grants yet should apply today - funding can even be applied to field trips that have already taken place during the 2008-09 school year.

Cambridge Charter School Student Will Compete in Poetry Out Loud Nationals

Wilmene Hercule, a ninth-grader at Prospect Hill Academy Charter School in Cambridge, won the Massachusetts Poetry Out Loud state competition at the Old South Meeting House in Boston on March 8. Hercule, who lives in Randolph, will represent Massachusetts at the national finals in Washington, DC on April 28. The first runner up was Katrina Turner from Newburyport High School and the second runner up was Jessica Charles from Randolph High School.

Celebrating Student Art in Westfield

Many towns typically host district-wide arts festivals in February and March to celebrate and share student work in the arts with their communities. Governor Patrick declared March Arts Education Month, as requested by the Massachusetts Arts Education Collaborative, to help focus public attention on the importance of arts education in the lives of students. This year, Westfield held its fourth annual Into the Arts Festival, organized by the Volunteers in Public Schools of Westfield and supported in part by the Westfield Cultural Council. This district-wide arts event, held at the high school, showcased the artwork of almost every student in the district, featured school bands and choirs, and gave local artists opportunities to demonstrate their work.

The NAMI Family-to-Family Community Outreach Video with Script is Available for Free

NAMI's Education, Training and Peer Support Center is offering the VHS version of the NAMI Family-to-Family Community Outreach video with script for free, subject to a maximum order of 10 videos, since we are no longer maintaining an inventory of them. This offer is on a first-come, first-serve basis. So place your order now. This video is used in Class 11, Advocacy, to publicize the Family-to-Family program in your local community. It is ideal for promoting the program to potential students. To order these videos contact Marshall Epstein at the NAMI National office at 703-516-7975 or via email. Please NOTE: This is a new promotion. Formerly we were offering free VHS Tribute videos.

The 2009 Family-to-Family Hall of Fame

It is time to nominate Family-to-Family teachers who have taught 10 or more classes and also teachers who have taught 20+ classes. Teachers in attendance at the NAMI Convention in San Francisco will be honored at the Education reception. All teachers will receive a Family-to-Family Hall of Fame certificate.

The nomination must come to us from the state Family-to-Family program director or executive director. We are also taking nominations for Family-to-Family trainers who have led 10 or more Family-to-Family teacher training sessions. The deadline to receive nominations is May 30.

Send nominations to Lynne@nami.org including mailing address, phone number, and an e-mail address if available.
