NAMI: Help Save Mental Health Care

NAMI

Take Action TODAY to Save Mental Health

NAMI

In most state legislatures across the country, elected leaders are considering tough decisions required to balance state government budgets in these challenging economic times.

In many states, decisions that will impact adults and children who live with mental illness and their families are still being explored. In other states, legislators have gone home--but the work is not over.

Now is the ideal time to reach out to your legislator and governor and raise your voice for mental health. Cuts to state mental health budgets threaten to devastate children, adults, families and our communities. When mental health care is cut, we all feel the consequences.

NAMI's State Advocacy 2010 initiative makes it easy to e-mail your legislators. Take a few minutes now.

Contact your legislators and governor today. Let them know that your life is affected by mental illness and that you know the important role that public mental health plays in offering the hope of recovery. Ask your elected officials to provide leadership in restoring needed mental health services.

Coming to PBS Stations in October: Minds on the Edge

NAMI: The National Alliance on Mental Illness

COMING TO PBS STATIONS IN OCTOBER

MINDS ON THE EDGE: Facing Mental Illness zeros in on wrenching situations playing out every day in hospital ERs, on city streets and school campuses, in courtrooms and in jails, as Americans struggle with serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The dramatic scenario of this Fred Friendly Seminars program reveals personal dilemmas facing individuals and families, medical practices that can be obstacles to treatment, and public polices that are falling short.

Moderated by Frank Sesno, the program features Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, Nobel-Prize-winning neuroscientist Eric Kandel, Pulitzer-nominated journalist Pete Earley, and other panelists from law, medicine, and public policy — including several who have personally faced the challenges of mental illness and offer their riveting insights.

Visit the Minds on the Edge Web site for TV schedule information
and multimedia content on serious mental illness.

If you miss the program on-air, you can watch online after 10/1.

Back to School with the NAMI Child and Adolescent Action Center

NAMI Goes Back to School with the CAAC

Back to School with the NAMI Child and Adolescent Action Center

The NAMI Child and Adolescent Action Center (CAAC) changes the lives of children and adolescents living with mental illness and their families through advocacy, support and education. Our goal is to build and support grassroots advocacy to ensure children's mental health care reform at the local, state and national levels.

Why Support the CAAC?

  • Each school year, the CAAC works with NAMI grassroots leaders to educate school and other child-serving professionals about the early warning signs of mental illness with the Parents and Teachers as Allies program.
  • The CAAC aims to keep youth where they belong -- in their communities with their families -- by focusing attention on the crisis occurring in the juvenile justice and child welfare systems.
  • The CAAC provides families with tools on how to effectively advocate for their child within the school system.
  • Along with other free resources, the CAAC offers NAMI Beginnings, a quarterly magazine that focuses on children's mental health issues.
  • The CAAC provides facts about child and adolescent mental health, treatment options and the various systems that serve youth online.

This school year, support youth living with mental illness. Support the Child and Adolescent Action Center.
