1. NAMI Elections - Call for Candidates, Resolutions and Bylaws Amendments!

Board Nominations are being accepted for candidates to serve on the NAMI National Board of Directors. Five candidates will be elected to the Board this year. Nominations may be made only by NAMI Affiliates and NAMI State Organizations in good standing. (To be in "good standing" Affiliates must have submitted their membership and paid dues at least 90 days prior to the Convention.) Affiliates and State Organizations may nominate no more than one individual each. Nominations must be on Affiliate/State letterhead and forwarded to the NAMI national office no later than April 9, 2009 (90 days prior to the NAMI annual meeting). Board nominees must be NAMI members.

Nominations via e-mail may be submitted to governance@nami.org. Electronic nominations must also be submitted on Affiliate/State letterhead.

Bylaws amendment proposals and resolutions for consideration at the 2009 NAMI Annual Convention in San Francisco, must be sent to the NAMI office at the above address by return-receipt mail, postmarked no later than April 9, 2009 Proposed amendments to the NAMI National Bylaws must be submitted in amendment form.

2. New Resource from the Multicultural Action Center

A Mental Health Recovery and Community Integration Guide for GLBTQI Individuals: What You Need to Know is a 12-page colorful booklet that covers a range of key issues in mental health recovery and community integration such as treatment and rehabilitation, financial support, housing, employment, and peer support with specific information to address the unique needs of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, and Intersex individuals embedded throughout. This resource was created in partnership with University of Pennsylvania's Collaborative on Community Integration of Individuals with Psychiatric Disabilities.

An advocacy companion to this booklet, GLBTQI Mental Health: Recommendations for Policies and Services, was also developed in this collaboration and will be made available soon.

3. February Adult "Ask the Doctor" Call with Dr. Ken Duckworth and Guest Dr. Bill McFarlane

Please join us for our monthly adult issues conference call with NAMI's Medical Director Dr. Ken Duckworth, and guest Dr. Bill McFarlane. Dr. McFarlane is the Director of the Center for Psychiatric Research and a Professor at the University of Vermont. He is an expert in the treatment of schizophrenia and will discuss "Early Intervention for Psychosis."

5. NAMI's 2009 Exemplary Psychiatrist Awards

We Invite You to Submit Nominations for Exemplary Psychiatrists!

NAMI is now accepting nominations for the 2009 Exemplary Psychiatrist Awards. This awards program allows NAMI members and affiliates in every state, city, and community throughout the country to honor publicly the wonderful contributions that many psychiatrists make to improve the lives of people with psychiatric disorders.

6. 2009 Teacher Training Grants for NAMI Basics

We are pleased to announce that we are ready to accept applications for Year Three teacher training grants for NAMI Basics, NAMI's new signature education program for parents and caregivers of children and adolescents with mental illness. A charitable contribution from Janssen Pharmaceutica, Inc. enables NAMI to bring the program to five (5) additional states in 2009. Training grants in the amount of $4,000 each will be given to the five states selected, to help cover the cost of teacher trainings.

Due to the high level of interest in the program, we will again utilize a competitive application process for state NAMI organizations. If you are interested in bringing this program to your state, we encourage you to complete the application process. To download the application packet click here.

7. 2009 Training of State Trainers NAMI Basics

The 2009 NAMI Basics Education Program Train-the-Trainer sessions will be held in St. Louis, MO starting Thursday, April 23 - Sunday, April 26.

NAMI Basics teachers must have taught at least one class in order to be eligible. A $450.00 fee will be charged for each participant; the fee will cover lodging (shared room-starting Thursday, April 23), meals, and materials.

We encourage you to take this opportunity to expand program capacity within your state and communities.

If you have selected your teachers, please send us an e-mail to 2009trainthetrainer@nami.org. Also, don't forget to include a support letter with the application. The deadline for registration is March 7.

8. 2009 Training of State Trainers: Family-to-Family, De Familia a Familia, and Family Support Facilitator Group

The 2009 Family-to-Family, De Familia a Familia, and Family Support Facilitator Group Train-the-Trainer sessions will be held in St. Louis, MO.

Family-to-Family English and Spanish
The selected teachers must have taught at least one class in order to be facilitated. A $450.00 fee will be charged for each participant; the fee will cover lodging (shared room-starting Thursday, April 23), meals, and materials.

Family Support Facilitator Group
The selected facilitators must have conducted at least one or more support groups. A $300 fee will be charged for each participant; the fee will cover lodging (shared room-starting Friday, April 24), meals and materials.

9. NAMI Connection Training of Trainers

The NAMI Education, Training and Peer Support Center is pleased to announce its third Training of State Trainers for the NAMI Connection program. This event will be held at the St. Louis Airport Hilton Hotel starting Friday, April 24 at 9:00 a.m. - Sunday, April 26, 2009 ending at 2:00 p.m.

Individuals attending this training will be certified as state NAMI Connection State Trainers. Participants selected by their state to attend this training must be certified NAMI Connection facilitators who have been facilitating a NAMI Connection group for no less than 5 months by April 24, 2009. For states that launched the program in 2008, costs for transportation, training materials, meals and lodging are covered by the Connection Program for up to three state trainers selected by each state. The training fee for state trainers in addition to the three covered by National is $350 which does not cover transportation.

State registrations of trainers are due by March 3, 2009.

The next training of state trainers will occur in October 2009.
