Dear AnnMarie,

Our new president has outlined his national disabilities agenda - and autism is the only condition highlighted specifically!

We've never had an opportunity as good as this in recent history… we may never have one like it again.

AnnMarie, the Autism Society of America, the nation's leading grassroots autism organization, helped focus President Obama's attention on our cause when we invited him and fellow candidate John McCain to speak at last July's ASA Town Meeting on Health Care.

Now we need your most generous financial support so that we can build upon our incredible momentum and rally the entire country to get behind President Obama's autism goals!

Summary of the Obama Administration's Autism Agenda:
1. Increased funding for research, treatment screenings, awareness, and support.
2. Improved life-long services for children and adults with ASD.
3. Funding the Combating Autism Act to improve federal/state autism programs.
4. Universal safe, secure ASD screenings for infants and 2-year-olds.
To read the Autism Agenda in its entirety, visit whitehouse.gov

On behalf of everyone at the Autism Society of America, I congratulate you on helping us to achieve this wonderful initial victory… and I implore you not to let this opportunity be lost…

Please give as generously as you can, as soon as you can… And tell others that now is the time to join our vital cause! Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Lee Grossman

SAVE THE CHILDREN

Our Children are this country's most valuable asset. Nothing means more to parents, teachers, doctors, nurses and the like, than children. Nothing...Keep them safe. This is not a time like we were raised in. We never had to worry about being kidnapped or taken away or getting lost. But today, all of those things are at risk. We must protect our children and we can do it by creating safety nets for them. Always know where they are and who they are with.

Helping to keep our children safe is a company that knows how; and whose business it is, to do just that. Check out Brickhouse Security and safeguard the lives of our families.

Hotel for Dogs

January 31, 2009

"AMC Entertainment (AMC) and ASA have teamed up to bring families affected by autism and other disabilities a special opportunity to enjoy their favorite films in a safe and accepting environment on a monthly basis with the "Sensory Friendly Films" program.

In order to provide a more accepting and comfortable setting for this unique audience, the movie auditoriums will have their lights brought up and the sound turned down, families will be able to bring in their own gluten-free, casein-free snacks, and no previews or advertisements will be shown before the movie. Additionally, audience members are welcome to get up and dance, walk, shout or sing - in other words, AMC’s “Silence is Golden®” policy will not be enforced unless the safety of the audience is questioned.

Did you go to one of our previous Sensory Friendly Flims? Tell us what you thought!

Tickets are $4-6 depending on location and can be purchased on the day of the event.

Find a participating theatre near you:

Don't miss our new theatres in Boston; Charlotte, N.C.; Chicago; Cincinnati; Columbus, Ohio; Dallas; Denver; Detroit; Ft. Lauderdale, Fla; New York City; Orlando, Fla.; Philadelphia; Seattle; and St. Louis."

THIS LANGUAGE SHOULD BE RESTORED

United Nations Human Rights Council logo.Image via Wikipedia

ASA Statement on January 14, 2009 Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) Meeting

ASA stands for improving the quality of life for people with autism and protecting their human rights across their lifespan. One of the purposes of the IACC is to conduct a transparent strategic planning process that results in research that answers the many questions facing the autism community.

On December 12, 2008, the IACC voted to approve language in its Autism Research Strategic Plan for proceeding with research on the relationship between vaccines and autism.

At the January 14, 2009, IACC meeting, this subject (not on the agenda and not following procedural rules) was raised for discussion, resulting in a vote that removed the language from the Autism Research Strategic Plan. The language approved in the December meeting on vaccine research is consistent with ASA’s vaccine statement. As this is an issue of importance and concern for the autism community, this language should be restored.

AN AUTISM SPEAKS INITIATIVE

Massachusetts Autism Advocates

Autism Speaks is pursuing autism insurance reform in over twenty states across the nation, including Massachusetts.

Last week, an autism insurance reform bill was introduced in the General Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The bill, sponsored by Representative Barbara A. L'Italien (D-42) and State Senator Frederick E. Berry (D-7), will require private healthcare policies to provide coverage of the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders. The autism insurance reform bill will cover applied behavior analysis (ABA) and other medically necessary, evidence-based treatments prescribed by an insured's treating physician or psychologist. Autism Speaks is partnering with AFAM (Advocates for Autism in Massachusetts) to ensure passage of this crucial legislation.

There are currently eight states that have passed similar bills across the country, including five states during last year's legislative season: Arizona, Florida, Louisiana, Pennsylvania and Illinois. This legislation will position Massachusetts to be one of the next groundbreaking states that provides access to treatment for families dealing with the challenges of autism spectrum disorder.

Your help is needed to generate support for the autism insurance reform bill from your Massachusetts representative. Note that the deadline for co-sponsorship is February 4th, so please reach out to your state legislators now...

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

1. CALL YOUR STATE LEGISLATORS. Find out who represents you and their phone numbers here.

2. SEND AN EMAIL TO YOUR STATE LEGISLATORS. We encourage you to take the opportunity to personalize the e-mail before you click send. You can do so in the box below our letter.

3. STAY INFORMED Visit the Autism Votes website and sign up today to receive alerts and information pertaining to the autism insurance reform bill.

4. FORWARD THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW A far-reaching grassroots effort will be crucial to the success of this legislation. Reach out to those who have asked how they can help by asking them to support this bill. They can show their support by by contacting their Massachusetts legislators and by registering for action alerts at AUTISM VOTES

HE DESERVES NOTHING LESS

Steve Jobs and Bill GatesImage by Joi via FlickrI have spent the last couple of days recruiting people into some Home Based Business programs and along the way I found so many joyful, creative, and helpful people and resources that I hope I can bring it all here to share with you.
I have been in the Ellen DeGeneres Network on Ning, I have joined 86 groups and met amazing and wonderful people and I hope that if you need resources, help or just someone that has something in common with you, you will go there and find what you need or desire. I am not promoting myself, I am suggesting that you look at all the groups and find something to share with others or fill a void for yourself.

There are single moms, persons with disabilities, veterans, song writers and singers, graphic artists, computer techies, cancer survivors and you can create a sight that becomes your own. I hope you find what you need there and if you don't...post here and I will help you to find it. The internet is the fastest way to reach the greatest number of people and when you translate that into help and assistance....where else would you need to be?

There are a couple of resources I want to share here today that I found in the Ning Community:Don't Sound like Your Parents
Be Humane To Animals and People

And in case anyone missed these environment resources on One Tree Hill the other night here they are:
1. 1 Aluminum can can save enough energy to run a TV or Computer for 3 hours.
2. Paying your bills online can help save over 1.6 billion tons of solid waste every year.
3. Recycling a 4 foot stack of newspapers is equivalent to saving a 40 foot Fir Tree.

SMALL STEPS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE

I was just reminiscing with my oldest son about my first introduction to computers in 1965 and in the course of the conversation he mentioned that Steve Jobs had stepped down from his position. He said he believed his pancreatic cancer had returned. Well, I pray that his recovery in 2004 will give him the strength to do it again. What he has given us in the world of technology is just the most amazing thing. When you think about getting up everyday and sitting in front of your computer having it bring the world right in front of you...think of Steve Jobs and also of Bill Gates and the amazing opportunities they have given the world. I hope that kindness follows Steve Jobs through his recovery and that he is thought of and prayed for daily by the masses, he deserves..NOTHING LESS.

PTSD's Purple Heart Medal

Purple Heart medalImage via Wikipedia
NAMI StigmaBuster Alert: January 12, 2009

PTSD's Purple Heart

A Department of Defense (DOD) advisory group has recommended that current DOD policy not be changed to allow Purple Heart medals to be awarded to soldiers stricken with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The current policy bestows the medal only on soldiers who are "physically" wounded in the line of duty.

Read the story in the New York Times and an excellent editorial in the Kansas City Star. DOD's current policy is as much an outrageous "slap in the face" to soldiers and veterans with PTSD as General George Patton's slapping of a soldier with "shell shock" was in World War II.

DOD can still reverse its policy, despite the advisory group's decision. Please contact the Secretary of Defense and tell him it's time to end stigma and discrimination against soldiers with PTSD. Their wounds are real.
