Coming to PBS Stations in October: Minds on the Edge

NAMI: The National Alliance on Mental Illness

COMING TO PBS STATIONS IN OCTOBER

MINDS ON THE EDGE: Facing Mental Illness zeros in on wrenching situations playing out every day in hospital ERs, on city streets and school campuses, in courtrooms and in jails, as Americans struggle with serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The dramatic scenario of this Fred Friendly Seminars program reveals personal dilemmas facing individuals and families, medical practices that can be obstacles to treatment, and public polices that are falling short.

Moderated by Frank Sesno, the program features Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, Nobel-Prize-winning neuroscientist Eric Kandel, Pulitzer-nominated journalist Pete Earley, and other panelists from law, medicine, and public policy — including several who have personally faced the challenges of mental illness and offer their riveting insights.

Visit the Minds on the Edge Web site for TV schedule information
and multimedia content on serious mental illness.

If you miss the program on-air, you can watch online after 10/1.

IMAGINE A WORLD WITH MORE BIRTHDAYS!

Until I quit smoking almost three years ago, I couldn't even blow out the candles on my cake, blow up a balloon, or even laugh without 2 paramedics and an oxygen tank. On My friend Michele's birthday a child asked me to blow up a balloon, I just took the balloon and was able to blow it up...that was an amazing feat to me that day. I did it without even thinking whether or not I could, and when I realized it...I felt amazing. I can now workout at the gym, walk on the treadmill, climbing hills, lifting weights and pumping away with exercise machines....my desire to live to be 100 is now believable to me. This video touched me in so many ways, I hope it does for others also.

ATTN Autism Advocate: We Need Your Help Right Now to Ensure Congress Ends Autism Insurance Discrimination - The next Few Hours Are Critical

09/24/09   Autism Votes... It's time for lawmakers to listen.

Dear Autism Advocate,

After a short August recess, Autism Votes is back and we need your help RIGHT NOW to ensure Congress ends autism insurance discrimination!

In a few hours, the Senate Finance Committee will vote on an amendment to the Committee's version of the health care reform bill (the America's Healthy Future Act of 2009) introduced by Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) specifying that the basic benefits package must provide coverage of behavioral health treatments. If passed, this amendment will be a major step forward towards ending autism insurance discrimination from coast to coast.

The good news is the Chair of the Committee, Senator Max Baucus (D-MT) supports this amendment!  We need your help RIGHT NOW to ensure that the members of the Senate Finance Committee support Sen. Menendez's amendment and make sure that individuals with autism do not fall through the cracks during this great debate over health care. Bottom line: any health care reform bill that does not end autism insurance discrimination is unacceptable!

Here is How YOU Can Help:

1. SENATOR BAUCUS, CHAIR OF THE SENATE FINANCE COMMITTEE SUPPORTS THE AMENDMENT! CALL SENATOR BAUCUS AND THANK HIM FOR HIS SUPPORT.

Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) (Chairman) - (202) 224-4515

2.  CALL THE MEMBERS OF THE SENATE FINANCE COMMITTEE LISTED BELOW AND TELL THEM TO SUPPORT THE MENENDEZ AMENDMENT FOR INCLUSION OF BEHAVIORAL HEALTH TREATMENTS!

Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV - (202) 224-6472
Sen. Jeff Bingaman - (202) 224-5521
Sen. John Kerry - (202) 224-2742
Sen. Ron Wyden - (202) 224-5244
Sen. Charles Schumer - (202) 224-6542
Sen. Debbie Stabenow - (202) 224-4822
Sen. Maria Cantwell  (202) 244-3441
Sen. Bill Nelson - (202) 244-5274
Sen. Thomas Carper - (202) 224-2441

Not sure of what to say? Say this:

"Hi, my name is __________ and I live in (City, State). I would like to let Senator (name) know that I believe that any healthcare reform bill that does not end autism insurance discrimination is unacceptable and that I would like him/her to support the amendment put forth by Senator Menendez that seeks to end autism insurance discrimination. Thank you so much."

2. FORWARD THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW THAT CAN HELP MAKE THESE PHONE CALLS. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, therapists, teachers, coworkers and neighbors - anyone who has ever said that they wished there was something they could do to help your child with autism. They can do this. They can help you end autism insurance discrimination so that you can get your child the therapy and treatment that they need.

Working together we can effectively end autism insurance discrimination for all the children from coast to coast!  For more information, visit our website at www.autismvotes.org.

Sincerely,

Shelley Hendrix

Help Military Families Get the Services Their Children with Autism Need!

Recently I emailed you the link to sample forms you can use to communicate between home and school. I’ve found such forms to be very helpful in smoothing the back-to-school transition for my own son with autism.

The Autism Society has provided people like you and me with invaluable services over the years, but they need our continued financial support. Your urgently needed gift during our Back-to-School Appeal will help us provide services for families living with autism and advocate for issues that affect students with autism.

Your gift now before our important Appeal ends on September 18th will also help us bring about more early autism identification for all children at 12, 18 and 24 months so that they can get appropriate treatments and support in the crucial early years.

Just as vital, your Back-to-School gift will also help us support teachers and schools through autism curricula and trainings that we hold all over America every year.

Please reaffirm your support to provide the help and hope that is so desperately needed by families living with autism during back-to-school time and all year round. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Marguerite Kirst Colston
