Join us as we host our 5th Annual Gala Dinner celebrating NAMI's work and dedication to improving the lives of more than 15 million Americans living with serious mental illnesses and their families. Founded in 1979, NAMI has become the nation's voice on mental illness.

NAMI will present its "Mind of America Scientific Research Award" at the Gala to Dr. William Carpenter for his groundbreaking research which has made a significant contribution to a better understanding and treatment of mental illness, particularly schizophrenia.

The prestigious audience includes members of Congress, political leaders, sports figures, the corporate sector, academia, the media, community leaders and many scientists and researchers from across the country. The event provides networking opportunities with an audience as impressive as our honoree and speakers.

Proceeds from the Gala benefit NAMI programs that serve individuals with serious mental illness and their families in all 50 states.

MIAW Media Planning

Sample press releases, op-ed articles and letters to editors for Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW), October 4-10, are available on the NAMI Web site. They should be sent to news media at least a week in advance (September 27+). They also can be used to prepare talking points for interviews or adapted to support activities around PBS's Minds on the Edge: Facing Mental Illness. For MIAW media information, please contact Christine Armstrong via e-mail or 703-312-7893.

UPDATE: Minds on the Edge

Close to 100 broadcasts of Minds on the Edge are now scheduled nationwide for MIAW. Check the Minds on the Edge Web site for details. Many NAMI affiliates are planning local events. For more information about the campaign, please contact Kristin Fellows via e-mail or 828.253.2296. If you are planning a local activity around the program, please make sure to also let Kristin know.

$250 Challenge

Fred Friendly Seminars, Inc. (FFS) which produced Minds on the Edge has issued a challenge to people who register as friends on the program's Facebook page. There currently are 700+ friends. Whoever the 1000th person is that registers, FFS will donate $250 to the non-profit mental health organization of that person's choice. Expand the discussion! Reach out to colleagues and friends! Have them register on the Minds on the Edge page and don't forget to register yourself.

Great Tool for Community Outreach—in time for MIAW 2009!

The second fully bilingual issue of ¡Avanzamos!, NAMI's popular Spanish-language publication, will be out soon--just in time for MIAW and Hispanic Heritage Month. This issue also features personal stories of mental illness recovery and family support, new research on resiliency of Latino teens, an article on how the Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation at Boston University is addressing the challenges Latinos face to receive psychiatric rehabilitation services and more. Articles are included in both Spanish and English.

Visit the NAMI Web site to subscribe to this publication in electronic format via e-mail, receive the print version via standard mail and access previous issues of ¡Avanzamos! in the online archive. This publication is not only a great tool for outreach but also an interesting and uplifting read for all.

This training will be for trainers from states that became part of NAMI Connection in 2007 or 2008 and for 2009 states that have certified Connection facilitators who meet the criteria. Individuals attending this training will be certified as state NAMI Connection Recovery Support Group Trainers.
