Rock the Boat for Autism Rows Home

This summer, five men rowed up the Atlantic Coast to make a difference in the lives of people affected by autism. “Rock the Boat for Autism” was the brainchild of John Lose and Ryan Meyer, both lifeguards in Wildwood, N.J. Inspired by Meyer’s sister, who is affected by autism, they recruited friends Larry Maher, James O'Donoghue and Daniel McCann to join them on the journey from Boca Raton, Fla., to Sea Isle City, N.J., to raise autism awareness. Help Military Families Get the Services Their Children with Autism Need!

Recently both the House and the Senate passed the National Defense Authorization Act, with a crucial difference between the two versions: the House’s version included an amendment from Congressman Joe Sestak that gives military families affected by autism access to the ABA therapy they need. Although the bipartisan and detailed Sestak Amendment was not included in the Senate version, it isn’t too late! Send the Armed Service Committee members an email explaining the crucial need for the Sestak Amendment to be included in the final bill. Read more ...

IACC Scientific Workshop Next Week

The Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee will hold a scientific workshop September 30-October 1 at the Bethesda North Marriott Conference Center, 5701 Marinelli Rd., Bethesda, Md. The workshop goals are to gain input on gaps in the strategic plan for autism research, opportunities for advancing research and knowledge, and suggestions for prioritizing objectives, and several Autism Society members will be giving presentations at the workshop. Highlights of Baucus Health-Care Reform Bill

Senator Baucus (D-MT), Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, recently released the America's Healthy Future Act of 2009. Several other Finance Committee members stated they have significant concerns with the bill, which is anticipated to cost approximately $774 billion over 10 years. Read more …

American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Funds Released for Education

The second and last installment of ARRA funding for education programs has been released to the states. Programs receiving their payments include the IDEA State Grant, the IDEA Early Intervention State Grant and the Vocational Rehabilitation State Grant.

A research team at Western Oregon University led by Dr. Louisa Silva, a board-certified M.D., Chinese medical practitioner and university professor, recently published a report finding that Qigong (Chee-gong) massage can have a positive effect on children with autism. Read more …
